Millbrae Bayfront - 12/4/2013

Clapper Rail
by Donna Pomeroy
We had a great turnout for the field trip to Millbrae Bayfront Park on December 4, 2013, with 15 enthusiastic participants.
The weather was frosty, but the high winds from the previous day had died down and the sun came out to warm things up. It was an exceptionally high tide, which brought out one Clapper Rail into easy viewing range. The rail was enjoyed for an extended period by everyone present. There was a nice variety of shorebirds, giving us nice comparisons of Whimbrels and Long-billed Curlews. Similarly, both Clark's and Western Grebes gave us a chance to compare the two species. We ended the trip with gorgeous views of a male Common Goldeneye right by the parking lot.
